When we first walked through this house, the windows were broken, the basement was leaking, there was no electricity, the yard was swallowed by weeds, and a fallen tree—home to a swarm of ground bees—had collapsed onto the roof. Dirt, grime, and cobwebs layered every surface. I won’t lie: it was hard to see the potential. I almost gave up.
Then Jesse and Shane showed up. Those two have been the true heroes — days of back‑breaking work gutting the basement, and clearing the yard. Slowly, the house stopped feeling like a lost cause and started feeling like a promise: still full of problems, sure, but full of potential.
The kids have become part of the chaos. Charlie insists on watching the backhoe and is part of the wrecking crew, Mila has already appointed herself the project designer with bold ideas, and Tyler has been showered with “gifts” or trash, however you want to look at it. We’ve even unearthed a few treasures — a vintage Burt Reynolds poster, an unopened Garth Brooks CD set, and a pile of racing trophies. Who knows what else we’ll find? A pot of gold would be nice, but I’ll settle for solid walls and floors.

This is just the beginning of a long renovation. Next up: getting the electricity back on.
